Build your own civilization, recruit legendary commanders, and lead armies across a shared world. Here's what makes Rise of Kingdoms an interesting strategy game to explore.

Rise of Kingdoms: Is This Strategy Game Worth Your Time?

Not every strategy game gives you control over an entire civilization. Rise of Kingdoms does, and that's where things get interesting.

Developed by Lilith Games, Rise of Kingdoms is a real-time strategy game built around city development, military expansion, historical commanders, and alliances. You're responsible for growing your civilization, managing its resources, building an army, and dealing with other players competing for control of the same world.

It's a mix of city management and large-scale strategy, with plenty happening beyond the walls of your own kingdom.

Building Your City Is Only the Beginning

Your city is where most of your early progress happens. Buildings need upgrades, resources need managing, troops need training, and research opens up new ways to strengthen your civilization.

There are several civilizations to choose from, each with its own starting advantages and special units. That choice gives you a different starting point, but your longer-term progress depends on how you develop your city and manage your resources.

The important thing is not to focus on upgrades without thinking about what your kingdom actually needs. A stronger economy, a capable army, and useful research all matter as you expand.

Battles Take Place Across a Shared World

Combat is one of the main reasons Rise of Kingdoms stands out among city-building strategy games.

Armies move freely across the world map in real time. You can send troops toward enemy territory, reinforce allies, defend important locations, or change your plans when another player makes a move.

That freedom makes positioning and timing important. Sending an army somewhere is easy; knowing when to move, when to hold back, and where your troops are most useful takes more thought.

And you aren't fighting against predictable computer-controlled enemies all the time. Other players have their own plans, armies, and alliances.

Commanders Are a Big Part of Your Strategy

Rise of Kingdoms features historical commanders including Sun Tzu, Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, and Cao Cao.

Each commander has different abilities, specializations, and talents. Developing them gives you more options when building your armies, but choosing a commander simply because they're famous isn't necessarily the smartest move.

Their skills and combinations matter. Some are better suited to particular troop types or battlefield roles, so learning how commanders complement each other becomes an important part of improving your strategy.

Alliances Change the Whole Experience

Playing alone only shows you part of what Rise of Kingdoms offers.

Alliances let players coordinate their armies, support one another, claim territory, and take part in larger conflicts. They're also useful for players who are still learning the game, since experienced members can offer guidance and help with progression.

Large battles require coordination. Having a powerful army is useful, but working with other players can make the difference when competing for valuable territory.

This multiplayer side gives the game a much bigger sense of scale than simply developing your own city.

Exploring the Map and Managing Resources

The world map is filled with areas to explore, resource locations, and points of interest. Scouts help reveal the fog-covered map, while gathering resources keeps your city and military development moving.

Food, wood, stone, and other materials are constantly needed for upgrades and research. Managing them becomes part of your strategy, especially when you're trying to expand while keeping your army strong.

It's worth paying attention to your economy instead of spending everything as soon as it's available. Your next major upgrade might be useful, but having enough resources for other priorities matters too.

Should You Give Rise of Kingdoms a Try?

Rise of Kingdoms is built for players who like planning ahead and watching their decisions shape a growing civilization.

The city-building gives you a reason to keep developing, commanders add another layer of strategy, and the shared world makes interactions with other players a major part of the experience.

It does require patience. Progress takes time, and the gap between newer kingdoms and established players can be noticeable. Optional in-game purchases are also part of its free-to-play model.

Still, if real-time strategy, historical commanders, and alliance-based warfare sound appealing, Rise of Kingdoms is worth checking out.
